로얄 그램머 스쿨(the royal grammer school) 은 공립학교로서 돈을 많이 벌어 merchant 의 칭호를 받은 robert beckingham (1509년 작고) 의 free school을 세우라는 유언에 의해 1512년에 세워졌다. 현재의 이건물은 당시 길포드시장의 청으로 영국왕 에드워드6세가 돈과 땅을 보태주어 1552년에 세워진 것이다 따라서 free grammar school of king edward vi 라고도 불렀다.
우리나라도 이런 사람들이 많이 나와야 하는데...부럽다.

이전에는 우체국(posting house) 겸 마굿간(stable) 이었던 건물 아래 아치형 문밑으로 난 작은 골목이 '천사의 문' 이라는 뜻의 엔젤게이트(angel gate)다.
